BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or general education (GED) is desirable; five or more years of experience in major repairs and maintenance in specialized areas, and one year in a supervisory position; or any combination of experience and training that would provide the following knowledge, abilities, and skills: Thorough knowledge of the operation, repair, and maintenance of vehicles, especially buses. Thorough knowledge of the use and care of tools and equipment required for vehicle maintenance. Thorough knowledge of safety standards applicable to vehicle repair and maintenance. Ability to supervise mechanics performing a full range of repairs and maintenance on vehicles and to assess their work. Ability to effectively diagnose mechanical problems and to perform appropriate repairs. Ability to plan and coordinate all the shop activities in an effective manner. Ability to conform with and to enforce all safety standards applicable to the shop. Ability to operate a two-way radio. Must possess a valid driver's license and/or commercial driver's license. Must be certified as a master mechanic. Certification for Virginia State Police safety vehicle inspection.

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK:

This is highly skilled and supervisory work. The employee supervises the work of mechanics and fuel pump attendants in a satellite transportation shop of the Prince William County School System. Inspects and diagnoses mechanical problems; performs a wide variety of vehicle repair and maintenance. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Vehicle Repair Shop Manager. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts, works and drives in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet, humid, and inclement weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:

Include the following: Schedules, assigns, and assesses the work of the shop crew. Coordinates bus rotation for monthly and semi-annual inspections of a fleet of approximately 200 buses. Inspects buses and other vehicles, troubleshoots, and repairs malfunctions of systems, including electrical, power train, braking, steering and fuel systems. Performs major tune-ups. Performs state inspections and monthly safety inspections on buses. Orders and obtains parts for buses, fuel, oil, and supplies; prepares reports. Checks all incoming work to assess requirements before assigning to individual mechanics; inspects and checks completed work as called for by each work order. Performs other duties as assigned.

SALARY:
Hiring Range: $49,858 - $70,265/year ($26.59 - $37.47/hour)
