JOB TITLE : AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE WORKER - OFFICE OF TRANSPORTATION

REPORTS TO : Shop Supervisor, Office of Transportation

DEFINITION : Performs a variety of automotive service duties. Dispenses fuel, lubricates equipment, and assists mechanics. Performs minor repairs and adjustments to buses, trucks, automobiles, and equipment. Operates buses, trucks, automobiles, and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES :

Dispenses gasoline, diesel fuel, oil, and antifreeze. Checks cooling systems, batteries, and engine oil levels. Lubricates automotive and mechanical equipment.

Repairs and mounts tires and tubes. Installs batteries, spark plugs, light bulbs, fuses, and other basic items. Cleans and waxes equipment.

Responds to calls for road service. Transports buses to and from breakdown locations. Test drives trucks, buses, automobiles, and equipment to diagnose malfunctions. Drives trucks, automobiles, and buses among the transportation shop locations.

Assists mechanics and others in the repair and reconditioning of all types of automotive and mechanical equipment. Maintains the working area in a clean and orderly condition. Cleans and cares for tools and equipment.

Keeps accurate records of work performed and materials and fuels dispensed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education, Training and Experience
Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent, plus six months of experience servicing automobiles and related equipment.

Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge and skills necessary to perform effectively in the class may be considered.

Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a non-commercial, class C (non-provisional) Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required at time of employment.

Possession of a valid commercial, class B Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required within six months of hire. (The class B license may require endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Knowledge of automotive parts, components, and systems. Knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in automotive repair, maintenance, and service.

Skill in the service of automobiles and other motor vehicles, related equipment, components, and systems.

Ability to make basic adjustments to automotive equipment as specified in maintenance manuals. Ability to keep records of fuel and lubricant disbursements. Ability to complete assignments by established deadlines. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS :
The work of this class entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment. Work requires exposure to the outdoor environment. Work requires strict adherence to instructions. Work is generally non-hazardous but failure to exercise reasonable care could result in injury.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT :
Persons appointed to this class are required to obtain a valid commercial, class B Maryland driver's license or an equivalent within six months of hire. (The class B license may require endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.) Employees who do not obtain the required license will be terminated.

Persons appointed to this class must be physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations and must remain physically qualified to operate such vehicles throughout their employment. Persons holding a commercial driver's license (CDL) are subject to alcohol and drug testing in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations and Board of Education policy.

Persons appointed to this class are designated as essential personnel and as such are required to work during emergency events, subject to call to duty, and may be required to work beyond their normally scheduled hours with little or no advanced notice.

FLSA STATUS : Non-exempt

Eligible for membership in the Baltimore County Employees' Retirement System.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • All persons employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (State of Maryland, Senate Bill 315, effective October 1, 1986) completed. The fee charged for fingerprinting is $81.00. An identification card will be issued which must be shown prior to employment.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide proper identification and documentation of eligibility for employment in the US.
  • If you have military experience you will be asked to provide a copy of DD214.
  • Official transcripts for all higher education must be received prior to contract signing.
  • Some positions will require employees to undergo a physical examination and/or drug testing.
  • All newly hired personnel must attend a Badges and Benefits session.
  • Additional job verification will be required for salary credit.
