This is an end of year position.

Summary: The Family School Advocate (FSA) works in a Title I school with administrators, teachers and staff to reach parents and families at home, in the community and at school. The FSA works with stakeholders to develop a school level parent and family engagement policy, provide accessibility and opportunities for families (including those with limited English and disabilities) to engage in their child's education and build capacity for parent and family leadership in the school.

Essential Duties: (These duties represent a sample and may vary by position.)
  • Work with all school personnel to promote an understanding of the value of parent/school partnerships and assist them with building effective partnerships with families
  • Engage parents and families in the development and understanding of the Title I Parent and Family Engagement Policy, home/school compacts and the School Improvement Plan (SIP)
  • Provide materials, activities and training to parents and families to help them effectively support their children at home and at school
  • Help parents and families to understand curriculum standards and assessments.
  • Collaborate with the principal and school leaders to organize and conduct the required annual Title I parent meeting to inform parents about the Title I program and its requirements
  • Participates in the school's School Leadership Team (SLT)
  • Organizes a flexible number of curriculum-based programs and activities for family engagement (quarterly)
  • Coordinate school-based activities with other district programs and initiatives
  • Communicates with parents and families through a variety of means (community and school-based meetings, school website, flyers, etc.) to ensure parents and families are informed of opportunities to engage with their child's school
  • Provide opportunities for parents and family members to volunteer, participate in and observe classroom activities
  • Conducts or assists with home visits to support student attendance and resolution of home/school conflicts
  • Performs related duties as assigned


Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
  • Understanding of curriculum and assessments
  • Ability to collect, synthesize and understand different types of student data (performance, attendance and discipline)
  • Ability to work collaboratively within the school and with individual community-based stakeholder groups (networking)

  • Two years of higher education or an Associate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning with an emphasis on Education, Sociology or Psychology and
  • Two years of successful experience in a related professional or educational setting

This is a 10 month position for 40 hours per week. This position is end of year.
