Job Summary
The Communications specialist researches, writes, and edits media such as news releases, social media posts, brochures, newsletters, and reports. The position coordinates media queries and facilitates media engagements as directed. The specialist communicates information and coordinates special events for Anchorage School District employees and various external audiences. This position updates web content on both internal and public facing websites. The specialist also writes Anchorage School Board memorandums and assists at school board meetings. The specialist recommends tactics that complement the overall communications strategy. All individuals chosen for interview will be required to supply writing samples of articles, press releases, editorials, speeches, and other materials related to their professional work experience. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, marketing, English, or a related field.A minimum of 3 years of experience in public relations or corporate communications.Experience with web content management systems and social media platforms.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Researches, writes, and edits press releases for distribution to the media and other copy for brochures, newsletters, the ASD website, social media, and reports.Researches, writes, and edits scripts for electronic media such as video and social media.Crafts focused situationally appropriate messages for senior leaders.Assists in the writing and layout of publications such as newsletters, reports, etc.Assists in media planning and in planning and organizing special events for ASD.Assists in the development, maintenance, and monitoring of ASD's social media presence.Helps create public information campaigns for ASD programs and initiatives.Maintains contact with media and school personnel to develop story ideas.Assists in writing Anchorage School Board memorandums and assists at board meetings.Communicates strategic initiatives with ASD employees and community members.Develops web content according to supplied specifications and ensures that web pages meet federal Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.Assists in the development of employee training materials and conducts training opportunities in communications, media, social media, customer service, and other topics as assigned.Communicates effectively with all levels of management, other Anchorage School District personnel, the media, and community members.Works effectively under deadlines and provides deliverables in a timely manner.Works effectively as a member of a cohesive team.Establishes and maintains productive working relationships with others.

Physical/Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to communicate by oral and written means in an appropriate business manner and have cognitive skills to understand instructions, readily recall facts and details, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
