REPORTS TO: Director of Analytics

The Boston Public Schools is seeking to fill the position of Data Quality Analyst in the Office of Data and Accountability. Over the past two years, the Office of Data and Accountability (ODA) and the Office of Instructional and Information Technology (OIIT) have worked collaboratively to implement the Ed-Fi data standard with support from the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation. The work of this position will directly support the departments' collaborative work in implementing the Ed-Fi data standard by developing processes for monitoring the quality of data in the Ed-Fi Operational Data Store and corresponding longitudinal data system. Additionally, the Data Quality Analyst will be responsible for documenting the life-cycle of data elements through our database architecture from time of collection to end-user reporting. As a member of a highly collaborative group, and given the time-sensitive nature of much of this work, the Data Quality Analyst can expect to rely on the experience of other analysts within the Office of Data and Accountability, and will be expected in turn to support the work of colleagues on related projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Work with the Director of Analytics, Director of Research, and Data Governance Manager within the Office of Data and Accountability to identify priority areas for monitoring data quality.
  • In partnership with the Data Governance Manager, implement innovations and efficiencies to our data quality monitoring practices.
  • In coordination with the Analytics team, define and implement data documentation standards.
  • Collaborate with analysts in ODA to develop common queries and code to increase efficiencies when filling data requests.
  • Perform various analyses on student-level, school-level, and district-level data to ensure consistency and quality between data systems.
  • Clean data sets and collaborate with OIIT to load data into data systems and longitudinal data storage.
  • Evaluate options and recommend processes for data management when new data collection is introduced in the organization.
  • In partnership with the Data Governance Manager, develop a process for mapping data systems and documenting the life-cycle of data elements through databases from time of collection to end-user reporting.
  • Fulfill data requests from internal and external members from the BPS community by extracting data from internal databases.
  • Serve as a member of the Data Governance Committee.
  • Perform other duties in the Office of Data and Accountability as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor's Degree and minimum of 3 years data analysis experience OR Master's Degree in related field and a minimum of 2 years of data analysis experience
  • Strong analytic and data systems management skills
  • Extremely strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency and/or expertise with statistical analysis software and programming languages such as STATA, R, SQL, Python, etc.
  • Enthusiasm for working on technical projects with a diverse team to completion.
  • Excellent time management skills, experience balancing competing priorities, and prioritizing resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal and strong problem solving skills.
  • The ability to explain complex analytical and technical concepts to lay persons in clear and concise easy to understand terms.
  • The ability to react to requests with both flexibility and firmness (and the ability to distinguish when to use which skill).
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment
QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:
  • Data analysis experience is preferably in K-12 education.
  • Experience collaborating across departmental lines
  • Knowledge of the Ed-Fi data standard
TERMS: Managerial, Tier C. City of Boston Residency is Required.

NOTE: School-based managerial employees will work 223 days between July 1st and June 30th each year. The 223 day work-year will include the 180 days in which school is in session, and the additional days will be determined by the employee and the principal or headmaster of the school. This position subject to the City of Boston residency requirement.

School-based managerial employees are not eligible for vacation time or compensatory time. In the event of school cancellation due to snow or inclement weather, school-based managerial employees need not report to work.
