2019-2020 SEZP ELL Academy: The Program
Over the past two years, the Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership (SEZP) has facilitated an English Language Learner Academy ("ELL Academy") to help foster the language development of English Language Learners from SEZP schools. Building on the success of this program, the 2019-2020 SEZP ELL Academy will expand to run from fall to spring and will specifically target Level 1 and Level 2 ELL students who have the highest need for English language development.
The vision for the ELL Academy is as follows:
ELL Level 1 and 2 students will build critical language skills, focusing on improvement of reading and writing abilities through leveled guided reading, phonics, and targeted writing curriculum.
Instruction will be informed weekly by data collected through reading conferences, oral phonics assessments, and writing exit tickets.
In addition to supporting student language development, we will grow teacher skill in active monitoring and data analysis through daily data meetings and practice sessions focused specifically on key language levers.

The SEZP ELL Academy is designed with a focus on providing students with high-quality instruction that focuses on research-based methods for aiding language development. We believe the following instructional practices are key to our success:

We commit to building our practices as educators for giving effective student feedback, particularly through building our active monitoring protocols.
Regular Data Collection and Reflection Practices: We recognize the relationship of high-frequency progress-monitoring, analysis of regular data, and use of data to devise personalized treatment plans to improving student learning outcomes and developing strong relationships with students. We commit to building our practices as educators for giving effective data analysis and management as a practitioner team.

2019-2020 SEZP ELL Academy: The Commitment
All staff are required to attend all teaching and training dates. Staff are expected to disclose any potential absences they anticipate having during the hiring process. These potential absences will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If staff are absent during any of the ELL Academy dates without prior approval, their employment with the ELL Academy may be terminated at that time.
2019-2020 SEZP ELL Academy: What You Will Do
Position Responsibilities:
Operations:
Develop the recruitment and retainment plan for ELL Academy
Coordinate with home schools to collect student information, including initial testing results and demographics
Complete orders of curricular materials and supplies needed per the Curriculum Leader
Coordinate with the SPS Transportation department
Coordinate ordering weekly lunches
Develop protocols for attendance collection, maintain attendance data, and communicate with families/schools of absent students
Develop the student incentive system and manage purchasing items to drive the incentive system
Coordinate the creation of the student anthologies with the Academic Leader and the printing company
Maintain the program budget
Purchase any materials needed for the Encore activities
Develop the plan for identifying if translators will be needed to support students in any classrooms and hire translators where needed
Run training for staff where needed to ensure seamless and efficient execution of all ELL Academy procedures
Data Management:
Work with the ELL Academy Leader and the Curriculum Leader to develop systems for collecting data
Run weekly data reports to identify students who are not meeting targeted growth goals
Mail-merge progress reports at the end of the fall and spring sessions, distributing them to families and schools
Run reports to present data to staff for analysis at the end of the fall and spring sessions

Qualifications:
Experience leading educators in an academy setting or specialized intervention programming
Experience with literacy interventions preferred
Familiarity with using data to inform intervention and/or instruction
Willingness to learn or further knowledge of evidence-based literacy intervention tools and techniques
Belief that all students can grow academically when provided with the opportunity to engage with high-quality teaching practices and materials
Confidence as a problem solver who works to overcome challenges
Demonstrated success in building relationships with students and teachers

The ELL Academy experience will also give the coordinator the opportunity to grow his/her expertise in intervention strategies that can carry over during the regular school year in a highly supportive learning environment.
