  • POSITION TITLE: STEM Engineer Specialist

    LOCATION: BCPS STEM Innovation Center at BCCHS

    SALARY: Grant Funded for 2019-2020 up to 760 hours at $34/hour

    SUMMARY : The BC STEM Innovation Center is a new 6 - 8 grade magnet school opening August 20, 2019. The implementation of this new school begins with 6th grade and will phase in 7th and 8th grades in the next two subsequent school years.

    To support the implementation phase of opening our new STEM Innovation Center, a temporary Engineering Specialist role has been created. This role will support our first year of staff, curriculum development and program implementation. Although, it is expected that a similar role may exist in year two, this is a fully-grant funded role currently approved only for the 2019-2020 school year.

    The engineer specialist role is planned to transition to a STEM/Engineering Instructional Coach and/or an Engineering Lead Instructor [IX endorsed] position in subsequent years. Because the credential skills and responsibilities will be significantly different post-implementation, this contracted role has been created to fill the gap, support STEM programming and instructional practices, while ensuring overall program outcomes.

    CALENDAR: Start date no later than September 7, 2019 and ending in May 2020. The final contracted schedule will be developed collaboratively based on the curriculum and staff needs aligned with the availability of the candidate. It is expected that this position will require afternoon availability three to four days per week, with some flexibility.

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Engineering Specialist will be expected to:

  • Provide support to certified staff through collaborative lesson design and implementation for the Engineering Design coursework inside the integrated STEM student experience.
  • Provide activity and lesson ideas and material-use instructions to staff in developing student experiences and user training of 3D Printing, CAD, Robotics, Animation, and other related materials and programs to support and enhance the engineering design process.
  • Develop non-consumable and consumable materials lists required to support successful implementation of 6th and 7th grade engineering and STEM design projects.
  • Manage materials inventory, set-up/stage and reset Engineering Design materials for lessons, labs and activities, and work collaboratively with classroom teachers to support emerging needs of 6th grade collaborative design teams as inquiry-based projects evolve.
  • Work collaboratively with the instructional team to develop robotics, 3D printing, coding, podcast broadcasting, and other innovative technology elective coursework.
  • Provide overall support as project-based, STEM focused, and integrated engineering instructional models are defined, created and implemented.
  • Provide instructional assistance (including but not limited to demonstration, staging, or debriefing) around innovative technology under meaningful and direct supervision of certified classroom instructors when necessary.
  • Identify networks, coordinate and schedule industry expert support for team presentations, student design feedback, and research during the design phases.
  • Provide expert input and feedback around engineering design methods to our curriculum design team during both the development of 7th grade curriculum; and reflective review and revision of 6th grade units as they are taught.
  • Position the engineering instructional practices in ways that ensure students are developing problem solving, critical thinking, and inquiry-based approaches to learning.
  • Exercise a positive, team-oriented approach to collaborative work using excellent communication skills.
  • Maintain accurate records of materials, project documentation, and schedules.
  • Practice high impact professionalism in all work and relations with others.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned.


  • REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • Must possess a Bachelor Degree in Engineering from an accredited university, including evidence on coursework specific to engineering design, technology integration in design, and engineering practices in discipline.
  • Experience using CAD, 3D Printing, Animation and/or other innovative STEM-related technologies to produce engineering design prototypes, renderings, or iterative solution designs.
  • Real-life experience using design constraints to guide engineering planning, design, revisions, prototype, and/or final production iteration(s).
  • Strong understanding of safety practices specific to an engineering fabrication design studio.
  • Ability to work in a team setting with professionals in a collaborative framework to design curriculum and develop instructional practices that support student learning through an engineering lens of design


  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience using CAD, 3D Printing, Animation, [Innovative Technology] in a K12 student setting to support project-based learning
  • Experience working with youth, at risk youth, learners in an educational setting or a K12 setting broadly in industrial trades, or specifically in an engineering design setting
  • Understanding of PBL-specific methods of instructional practices, developing, managing, and supporting collaborative teams
  • NSGx applied (or work experience equivalent) understanding of Engineering and Cross Cutting Concepts as drivers of problem identification, solution design, and engineering iterative process.
  • Experience with material ordering systems, inventory management, and procurement of project materials
  • Project management experience
  • Expertise in STEM focused, project-based learning experiences using integrated approaches that use an engineering analysis lens
  • Additional Computer Science and/or Technology instructional certification or industry expertise
  • Graduate Level Coursework in area(s) of Education or STEM related discipline
