The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every child, in every community, has access to a high-quality education that prepares them for success in college and career.

CPS is seeking a motivated, dynamic, team-oriented attorney to join the Transactions Unit as Senior Assistant General Counsel. Candidates must have excellent analytical skills and judgment, and the ability to work both independently as well as collaboratively in a high volume, fast-paced environment. The Senior Assistant General Counsel will work un der the direct supervision of the Deputy General Counsel and demonstrate a proven ability to develop working relationships and engender the trust of our internal clients.

The Senior Assistant General Counsel will join the Transactions Unit at a transformative time and will contribute to significant process improvements. We are looking for an attorney who is not afraid to share their ideas and be part of a team reimagining the way CPS operates.

Responsibilities include:

  • Draft and negotiate a broad range of contracts supporting the day-to-day operations of the Chicago Public Schools, including general services, technology, research, supply contracts, financings, and other related documents in compliance with Board rules, policies, and applicable laws.

  • Serve as a collaborative partner to internal stakeholders and provide pragmatic, focused legal counsel on transactional matters, interpretation of contracts, applicable laws, CPS rules, and policies.

  • Assist with continuous improvement efforts and the development of a streamlined, organized and efficient protocol for contracts and contracting processes, including establishing playbooks, and standard template language to be used in contracts and establishing processes and workflows governing the intake, review, and approval of contract requests.

  • Handle special projects as needed.



In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Senior Assistant General Counsel must possess the following qualifications:

Type of Education and License Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school. Must be licensed to practice law and in good standing in the State of Illinois.

Type of Experience and Number of Years: 5+ years of work experience as an attorney at law firm and/or as in-house counsel. A combination of law firm and in-house experience is preferred .

The successful candidate must possess excellent analytical, negotiation and drafting skills, with proven ability to anticipate, manage and analyze legal issues and to present recommendations and guidance in a clear and concise manner.

Residency Requirement: As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of his or her CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
