Norwalk Public Schools lead the state of Connecticut’s urban school districts, placing first in our district reference group according to the most recent Connecticut Next Generation Accountability Report. Located in southwestern Connecticut, in southern Fairfield County, on the northern shore of Long Island Sound, Norwalk lies within the New York metropolitan area as well as the Bridgeport metropolitan area. The district takes pride in building a student-focused culture that motivates, challenges and supports students to reach their highest levels of achievement. Over 1,500 dedicated professionals serve 11,500 students in 21 schools.
The Norwalk Public Schools district includes twelve elementary schools, four middle schools, four high schools and one inclusive pre-school. The state-of-the art Norwalk Early Childhood Center opened its doors in September 2016 to serve preschool families of both typical and special needs children.
Norwalk offers several magnet schools at the elementary level, including Columbus Magnet School, based on the Bank Street School model; Silvermine Dual Language School, an English-Spanish immersion program, and Tracey Magnet School, recently named the state’s only national School of Character. A Montessori program will be launched at Brookside Elementary starting in the fall of 2019.
Norwalk is also home to the Center for Global Studies, an inter-district high school magnet; and, in partnership with IBM and Norwalk Community College, P-TECH at Norwalk High, the State’s first 9-14 early college program. In 2017, Brien McMahon High School was approved to offer the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program.
Rich in diversity, Norwalk students come from a variety of backgrounds, with 42% of students speaking a second language at home. The school system delivers a learning experience that is rich in cultural diversity and reflective of the global society in which its graduates will work and live.
Norwalk Public Schools provide comprehensive special education and bilingual education programs along with full day Kindergarten and expanded Pre-K opportunities. Before and after-school programs are available throughout the city for both elementary and secondary students. Students enjoy a full array of interscholastic athletics and extra-curricular activities that cover a full range of interests. Several programs consistently receive national recognition, including our high school marching bands and orchestras and the Center for Youth Leadership.
In 2017, a comprehensive School Building Program was approved that is designed to support the city's families for years to come. A joint commitment by the City of Norwalk and Board of Education resulted in a major investment in Norwalk's school buildings including the building of several new schools and the renovation of others, as well as priority repairs and capital projects at all schools. As part of the program, construction is under way on the new K-8 Ponus Ridge STEAM Academy.
Recent results outlined in the Connecticut Next Generation Accountability Report showed significant gains across a broad set of indicators and put Norwalk in the lead of the state’s 21 city school districts. The district has been working toward six major goals in its Strategic Operating Plan.
Raising the Bar Closing the Gap Increasing Choice
