RESPONSIBILITIES

SUMMARY Assists a physical therapist with carrying out the therapeutic PT program as indicated in the Individualized Educational Program (IEP). The PTA is responsible for carrying out duties set forth by the administrator of the physical and occupational therapy program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Implement intervention programs appropriate to the student's specific needs, as designated by the managing PT and the student's Individualized Education Plan.

Meet regularly with the managing Physical Therapist for the purpose of reviewing the student's status. Document student's progress toward objectives.

Establish and maintain appropriate working relationships with school staff, parents, and health care personnel.

Consult with the managing Physical Therapist prior to contacting the student's physician regarding problems and/or unusual changes in the student's program.

Coordinate and schedule direct service for students.

Consult with teachers and other service providers.

Participate in District in-service programs.

Conform to District policies and procedures.

Coordinate and/or assist in the preparation of materials for student use.

Assist the Physical Therapist in communicating with parents concerning home programs, equipment and other therapy related matters.

Recommend individual equipment needs and modifications to the Physical Therapist and assist in adapting, fabricating, and maintaining equipment.

Observe professional and medical ethics.

Maintain current documentation for the school Medicaid program and forward such documentation in a timely manner to the appropriate administrative personnel.

Perform other duties assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Associates degree with certification in a Physical Therapist Assistant program.

EXPERIENCE: Completion of both academic and clinical requirements including graduation from an approved curriculum for the training of Physical Therapist Assistants. Prior experience with children with disabilities as well as experience and training in providing interventions in an educational environment is preferred.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Knowledge of individual equipment needs and modifications to assist in adapting, fabricating equipment to meet student needs.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: Current certification as a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) as indicated by passing the national certification examination. Valid Colorado driver's license and auto insurance.

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

CONTACTS: Daily contact with persons within unit/building and parents to furnish or obtain information and with students to resolve problems or negotiate matters. Work closely with Physical Therapist and support personnel and any/all other teams at site.

SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: Low exposure to cuts and bruises due to typical school/clinic accidents and to disease due to exposure during treatment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, or crawl; twist; reach with hands and arms; sit; stand; walk; push; pull; carry materials; repetitive motions; and talk. The work is performed primarily indoors. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Ability to meet Physiphysical needs of students.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and use interpersonal skills. The employee is frequently required to compare and analyze. The employee is occasionally required to copy, coordinate, compute, evaluate, compile, and negotiate.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING: This position requires independent judgment, decision making skills, and medical knowledge to assist students according to District standards. Work is guided by District policies, written medical protocols, and health action plans. Decision making requires collaboration with supervisor, Physical Therapist, and per District protocols. Errors in decision making could impact a child's health and safety, lead to further injury.

DIVERSITY OF DUTIES: Ability to travel to more than one work location per day may be necessary to provide PT services to students. Personal vehicle is required for travel between schools.
