The Associate Counsel has responsibility for preparing and trying complex court cases for City Schools in both State and Federal Courts. Essential Functions
- Assist with the administrative responsibilities of the litigation division.
- Oversees and evaluates the work of legal assistants and supporting staff.
- Prepares for and defends City Schools in complex suits that are brought in State and Federal Courts.
- Represents City Schools at court hearings and administrative proceedings. Performs legal research and renders legal opinions on difficult questions that are raised, in particular issues involving current or potential litigation exposure.
- Prepares and files briefs for cases before the United States Supreme Court, United States District Court of Appeals and Maryland Court of Appeals.
- Drafts agreements, releases, contracts, and other legal documents.
- Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and non-discrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies and the professional standards.

Desired Qualifications
- Possession of a Law Degree from an accredited law school
- Five (5) years of trial experience which includes significant federal and state jury trial work
- Direct experience in preparing and trying civil and district litigation cases
- Appellate experience strongly preferred
- Member of the Bar of the State of Maryland
- Member of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, and US Court of Appeals of Fourth Circuit (preferred)
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of law
- Knowledge of Federal, State and City statutes and regulation
- Knowledge of general school law and municipal law
- Knowledge of court procedures
- Ability to prepare and try complex cases
- Ability to research, organize, interpret and apply legal principles
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
