The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every child, in every community, has access to a high-quality education that prepares them for success in college and career.

CPS is seeking a Senior Assistant General Counsel who will be responsible for independently handling a wide array of procurement and contract issues and who will provide legal counsel to senior managers. The Senior Assistant General Counsel will work under the direct supervision of the Deputy General Counsel.

The Senior Assistant General Counsel will join the Transactions Unit at a transformative time and will contribute to significant process improvements. We are looking for an attorney who is not afraid to share their ideas and be part of a team reimagining the way CPS operates.

The Senior Assistant General Counsel will have the following responsibilities:

  1. Independently negotiate and draft all of the documents necessary to procure goods and services on behalf of the CPS;

  2. Work closely with the Procurement Department and internal CPS departments to prepare and review solicitations ( e.g. , Bids, Requests for Proposal, and Requests for Qualification, etc.);

  3. Independently negotiate and draft sales and purchase agreements, letters of intent, leases and lease amendments, license agreements, rights of entry, donation agreements and brokerage agreements; and

  4. Ensure compliance with all Board Policies; and

  5. Review and assist with the development of in cooperation with Procurement and other departments.



In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Senior Assistant General Counsel must possess the following qualifications:

Type of Education Required : Must be licensed to practice law and in good standing in the State of Illinois.

Type of Experience and Number of Years : 5+ years of related transactional experience.

Residency Requirement:

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of his or her CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
