Purpose of Position: The summer semester principal is a critical member of our leadership team that ensures each summer semester site is thriving and prepares every student to graduate college, career and community ready. The summer semester principal is responsible for providing overall leadership, oversight and management of their assigned site. This includes hiring, supervision and evaluation of staff, instructional leadership, building management, and execution of all plans leading up to, during and close out after the summer semester.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Collaboration, Pre-planning and Meetings

  • Review all guidance documents and applicable information to ensure correct administration and oversight of the Summer Semester site.
  • Attend a series of planning meetings with the summer semester office (approximately once a month from February to mid May, and then biweekly or as needed until summer semester begins).
  • Schedule and hold meetings prior to and/or during PD week to align schedule, routines, procedures and common expectations.
    • School-year building Principal (if applicable)
    • Summer Semester Secretary
    • MSCR Site Director (if applicable)
    • Special Education Coordinator/PST
    • Engagement Team: PBS coach, Counselor, Secretary, etc
  • Work with the summer semester office to identify courses for the course catalog (HS only).
  • Work with the Coordinator of Instructional Programming to maintain the SS Master Schedule at your HS site.
  • Attend scheduling training to learn how to make schedule changes and basic functions in Infinite Campus.
  • Plan and execute the "All Staff meeting" the week before summer semester begins.
Recruitment & Staffing

  • Recruit and recommend staff for HR to hire.
  • Work with feeder Principals to identify, recruit and recommend their staff.
  • Work collaboratively with HR to provide ongoing and active recruitment support until your site staff are finalized.
Evaluations

  • Evaluate summer semester staff based on established expectations and professional development opportunities.

Site Logistics and Management -Manage all aspects of the assigned summer semester site, including, but not limited to;

  • Ensure consistent implementation of summer semester curriculum, all summer semester assessments; as well as 3 week progress reports and end of summer reporting.
  • Oversee the consistent implementation of beginning and end of summer semester Assessments, where applicable.
  • Work with the summer semester Secretary and Instructional coach to ensure summer semester report cards are adequately and successfully completed.
  • Establish and maintain an effective learning environment.
  • Maintain relationships with parents, parent groups, summer volunteers and community agencies.
  • Schedule and implement regular meetings with MSCR site director to align schedule, routines, procedures and common expectations.
  • Schedule and implement regular meetings with Special Education PST to align schedule, routines, procedures and common expectations.

  • Designation of room assignments.
  • Creation of plans for the PBS coach/Dean, CC teachers, BRS, EA/SEA support in classrooms.
  • Confirmation and execution of technology needs.
  • Establishment of safety procedures, fire and tornado drills, bell schedules, etc.
  • Creation of the master schedule (High Schools only, in collaboration with summer semester Secretary).
  • Maintaining the master schedule in Infinite Campus in collaboration with summer semester Secretary.
  • Ensure effective communication and coordination between MMSD summer semester, MSCR and AmeriCorp Schools of Hope.
  • Plan service delivery for support teachers (PBS, SEAs, Counselors, BRS).
  • Plan logistics for arrival, breakfast, lunch, transitions and departures
  • Plan and facilitate staff meetings to share semester procedures, expectations, set the tone for climate and create community.
  • Establish information sharing protocols and expectations with feeder summer semester principals to gather information regarding students for planning purposes.
  • Confirmation and execution of technology needs.
  • Establishment of virtual safety procedures, schedules, etc.
    Creation of the master schedule (High Schools only, in collaboration with summer semester Secretary).
  • Maintaining the master schedule in Infinite Campus in collaboration with summer semester Secretary.
  • Ensure effective communication and coordination between MMSD summer semester and MSCR staff
  • Plan service delivery for support teachers (Counselors, BRS, CC).
  • Plan and facilitate staff meetings to share semester procedures, expectations, and support implementation of virtual learning
  • Plan and facilitate Engagement Team meetings to monitor attendance, VL engagement and create action plans as needed.
  • Establish information sharing protocols and expectations with feeder semester principals to gather information regarding students for planning purposes.
  • Support teachers to create office hours and teaching schedules.
  • Continue to plan on conducting virtual "walkthroughs"


Length of Work/Time Commitment:

Pre-planning:

  • Approximately six to seven 1.5 hour planning meetings with the summer semester office.
  • Mandatory meeting on security with the Chief of Operations in May.
  • Other pre-planning meetings, as required.
  • Week of June 13- support Summer semester professional development, schedule meetings with Special Education Coordinator, MSCR site director (if applicable) to align schedule, routine, procedures and common expectations. Schedule an all staff meeting with summer semester staff to launch the program and set expectations for the session.
6 Weeks of summer semester:

  • Elementary and Middle School Principals:
    • Week One -- 7:30am (15 min before the start of student contact time) until the "All Call" in the evening. Summer semester Principals are expected to remain on site the entire time until the All Call is received if F2F.
    • Weeks Two through Six -- 7:45am until 1:00pm to allow for the successful transition to MSCR for afternoon programming.
      If Virtual, five hours/day.
  • High School Principals:
    • Week One: 7:30am (or 15 min before the start of student contact time) until 1:00pm (or 45 minutes after classes end to ensure all students exit safely).
    • Weeks Two through Six: 7:45am (or beginning of student contact time) until 1:00pm.
      If Virtual, 5.5 hours/day


Qualifications:

  • Wisconsin DPI Administrative license
  • Current administrative experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates proficient Instructional leadership
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of IEP management and special education delivery systems.
  • Demonstrates excellent attendance
  • Demonstrates the ability to build and maintain effective external & internal relationship
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with all stakeholders
  • Ability to lead all phases of instructional programs
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain a master schedule for students enrolled in summer semester.
