General Statement of Duties

Works closely with other assistant county attorneys in providing general legal services for School administration, the School Board and other County entities; does related work as required.
Essential Duties
The Henrico County Attorney's Office is seeking to hire a full-time attorney to join our school legal services team! This position serves Henrico County’s world class public school system, the sixth largest public school division in the Commonwealth. A successful applicant will have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of over 50,000 students and more than 7,000 dedicated education professionals across 72 schools.
A successful applicant may expect to advise the Superintendent, School Board, Executive Leadership Team, and other school district staff regarding a wide variety of legal issues related to the Constitution, employment, civil rights, students' rights, real estate, contracts, and state and federal laws. This position advises the School Board and Superintendent of legal trends and recommends appropriate action; represents the School Board and Superintendent in personnel hearings; interprets federal and state laws and renders legal opinions; provides legal advice in employment matters; conducts research; and works closely with highly-educated clients to ensure policies, procedures, and programs comply with the law. The successful applicant will work closely with two other attorneys in the school district's Central Office, located at the Eastern Government Center on Nine Mile Road, with occasional flexibility to work remotely.
Extensive knowledge of general and governmental law; good knowledge of State and County laws and federal laws and regulations and their relationship to the authority and functions of County and State; ability to organize, interpret and apply legal principles and knowledge to complex legal problems; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials and the general public; good professional judgment; good legal research and writing skills; ability to effectively supervise.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited school of law and six (6) years of experience in the practice of law, preferably with one (1) additional year of experience directly related to area of responsibility, and including some supervisory experience; OR , any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Additional Information
Applicants should have a strong academic background, interest in education law, and excellent research and writing skills. The ideal candidate has experience in all aspects of employment law; knowledge of constitutional law, civil rights law, and education law; excellent communication, advocacy, legal research and writing skills; ability to organize, interpret and apply legal principles and knowledge to complex legal problems; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, elected officials and the general public; and good professional judgment. Experience in employment law matters, litigation, and education law is highly preferred.
The successful applicant must have a Juris Doctor degree and be a member of the Virginia State Bar. At least five (5) years of experience in the practice of law is preferred. Salary will be commensurate with experience. The County offers excellent health care benefits, provides generous paid leave, offers a tax deferred retirement benefit plan, and participates in the Virginia Retirement System.
A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee.
