PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Development Specialist-ELL position is designed for an educator who strives to positively impact the professional development of teachers of English Language Learners (ELL), who provide instruction for students that participate in the Bilingual, Dual-Language or English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. The primary role of the ELL Development Specialist is to support teachers of ELL by providing coaching, curriculum and instructional resources in the use of high-yield ELL strategies. The Development Specialist-ELL leads professional development focused on content development, lesson design, instructional delivery, classroom environment and language acquisition. These professional development sessions will include, but not limited to high yield ELL strategies sheltered instruction, curriculum implementation; while addressing the cognitive, linguistic and affective domains. The work of the ELL Development Specialist will be guided by research-based best practices, instructional delivery and current data which results in the academic success of ELL.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree from accredited university
  • Five years' job-related experience in education
Preferred:
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate
  • Five years' job-related experience in PK-12 education with English Language Learners
  • Bilingual and/or ESL Certification
  • Successfully demonstrated track record of success with providing professional development for teachers of English Language Learners who provide instruction for students that receive special education services

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent skills in the use of Microsoft Office applications
  • In-depth knowledge of state curricular standards as written, taught and assessed
  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state and local laws, policies, procedures and processes related to the education of students who receive services through Bilingual/ESL, career and technical, gifted and talented and/or special education programs
  • Ability to train teachers with zero years of experience who provide instruction for students that receive Bilingual and/or English as a Second Language services in the critical attributes of instruction and student engagement with diverse populations
  • Excellent data analysis skills

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Safeguards the confidentiality of all documentation provided or generated.
  • Guides implementation of the district's blended learning model (Empowered Learning)
  • Supports and conducts embedded coaching for teachers who provide instruction for ELs that participate in Bilingual or ESL programs throughout the school year, on weekends and during the summer.
  • Engages teachers who provide instruction for ELs that participate in Bilingual or ESL programs in adult learning experiences designed to develop a district culture that fosters a growth mindset and promotes all employees as learners.
  • Develops, designs, facilitates and delivers professional development for teachers who provide instruction for ELs that participate in Bilingual or ESL programs that includes, but is not limited to, instructional best practices to address the cognitive, linguistic and affective domains in the teaching of ELS; high yield EL strategies sheltered instruction and data action planning, collaborative professional learning communities; reflective practices; and effective technology integration
  • Develops, designs, and facilitates curricular review teams with teachers, specialists and coaches.
  • Adds differentiation and scaffolding to curriculum for bilingual, dual-language, ESL and LOTE courses.
  • Ensures resources and materials are aligned to the curriculum and meet the needs of English Learners (ELs)
  • Creates the English Learner digital resources in Schoology
  • Partners with the Curriculum & Instruction team to model best practices and differentiation of curriculum and instruction by creating resources in various formats to meet the needs of all English Language Learners.
  • Promotes and models the integration of technology throughout the design and delivery of coaching and professional development modules.
  • Prepares for and conducts coaching and professional development sessions for campus-based or campus-support personnel throughout the school year, on weekends and during the summer, as needed.
  • Participates in all district trainings throughout the school year and during the summer.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. This position will require traveling within the district.

Mental demands: ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data; ability to interpret TEC and policy; ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory, ability to be effective in both oral and written communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress. Extended hours may be required for the position.
