POSITION SUMMARY

The Center for Equity & Social Justice ("CESJ") Coordinator (Equity Communications & Public Relations) provides the direction and leadership necessary for the successful development and execution of an engaging communications strategy that raises the visibility, enhances quality, and expands the impact of the district's mission and objectives to advance educational equity. The coordinator will work with district leadership to develop, implement, and monitor the CESJ communications strategy and serve as the strategic storyteller for equity-centered APS messaging. As a key member of the CESJ team, the incumbent will play a vital role in developing CESJ strategic public engagement initiatives. Additionally, the coordinator will develop and update the division's communication plan, and implement communications strategies that highlight the district's progress through targeted media placements, website/social media content management, and other special writing projects, as needed.

This position requires occasional evening work hours and the ability to manage changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Creates, plans, and provides strategic oversight of public relations program for the Center for Equity and Social Justice. This includes but is not limited to developing organizational communications plans, resources, and publications for APS stakeholders and the development of equity-focused communications
  • Researches, writes, and prepares executive-level remarks talking points, presentations, publications, and other related strategic messaging to support the district's mission and vision (e.g., Atlanta Board of Education updates, CESJO speeches for district events, APS employee outreach, video production scripts, newsletters, blogs, social media posts, and additional publications, etc.)
  • Develops and maintains an annual/monthly strategic communications content calendar for key CESJ projects, initiatives, and routine business
  • Identifies key messaging needs and communication gaps in the organization in close collaboration with CESJ leadership/staff, the APS Communications department, and other district leaders
  • Provides guidance to the CESJ leadership team in drafting and effectively proofreading communications targeted for APS stakeholders in a timely, current, and relevant manner
  • Reviews and edits essential communications and messaging materials before dissemination to ensure accuracy, appropriateness, and visual clarity
  • Collaborates with communications/PR partners and vendors, as needed, to successfully execute the CESJ messaging and brand strategy
  • Coordinates internal communication efforts with other internal departments, such as APS Communications, to ensure consistent messaging
  • Maintains branding standards and implements corporate identity systems from the creation of prototypes to the troubleshooting of production issues
  • Researches and implements best practices in equity-centered communication/PR, particularly in public education settings for APS stakeholders
  • Leads CESJ communications for crucial initiatives and work closely with the CESJ leadership team to keep abreast of APS/CESJ developments, the climate of public education policy updates, as well as educational equity trends, successes, and challenges
  • Evaluates the quality, reach, and impact of CESJ communications; identifies and evaluates key metrics that will signal success as well as highlight focus areas to implement continuous improvement efforts
  • Creates routine and ad hoc CESJ communication materials, such as messages via the CESJ website, presentation materials, emails, memos, webcasts, senior executive correspondence, blogs, publications, and social media
  • Identifies opportunities for external publication to enhance the visibility of APS and CESJ's efforts to advance equity as a national model of success; works with media outlets to publish timely and accurate district and school-level information and managing media relationships
  • Assists in coordinating crisis communications for the district, as needed, as well as plan and deliver PR-related professional learning and development
  • Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person or virtually and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular business hours, and as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative


Requirements :

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, multimedia media studies, journalism, English, history, psychology, or other writing-intensive and related field
  • Master's degree preferred

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:

Valid driver's license and availability of private transportation

WORK EXPERIENCE:
  • 3 years of experience in a role that consists primarily of demonstrated expertise in strategic communications, public relations, journalism, executive-level speech writing, brand management, editing, publication production
  • Experience with web design, content management systems, or graphic design is a plus

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • An authentic passion for advancing equity and social justice
  • Skilled in effectively engaging diverse audiences with different communication styles
  • Demonstrated knowledge of communication, media, and graphic design tools (i.e., Canva, Visio, InDesign, Photoshop), SharePoint, enterprise email systems, design applications, and advanced applications of standard office software, such as MS Office
  • Clear understanding and expertise of the role technology plays in effective communication
  • Adept at managing organizational narratives, creating unified and consistent messages, measuring, analyzing and improving processes, and navigating crisis communication needs
  • Proficiency in using social media to reach and engage internal/external audiences
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, be adaptable, problem solve, and work collaboratively

Salary Grade: 133

Salary Range: FY'21 APS Salary Schedule (All Positions)
